How Many Slides Do You Need? Slides per Minute Calculator
Enter your talk length and how fast you like to move, and get a recommended slide count, time per slide and how many of those slides are actual content. Presets cover the one-slide-per-minute rule, Guy Kawasaki's 10/20/30 rule and Pecha Kucha's 20×20.
Your talk
One slide per minute — the classic rule of thumb for business presentations.

How it works
- Talk time = total time minus any Q&A you set aside. Slides are planned against talk time only.
- Recommended slides = talk time ÷ seconds per slide, rounded. "Standard" is 60 seconds per slide — the classic one-slide-per-minute rule.
- "Dense" is 30 seconds per slide, typical of visual, image-led talks. "Relaxed" is 2 minutes per slide for lectures and data-heavy decks.
- "Kawasaki" applies the 10/20/30 rule: 10 slides, 20 minutes, 30-point font — 2 minutes per slide. "Pecha Kucha" is fixed at 20 slides × 20 seconds.
- Content slides subtract a title and a closing slide from the total, since those carry no talking time.
Frequently asked questions
How many slides for a 10 minute presentation?+
About 10 slides at the one-per-minute rule, 5 if your slides are dense, up to 20 if they are quick visuals. Subtract a title and closing slide to get 8 content slides.
How many slides for a 20 minute presentation?+
Around 20 slides at standard pace, or 10 if you follow the 10/20/30 rule. If you reserve 5 minutes for questions, plan for 15.
How many slides for a 45 minute or 1 hour talk?+
45–60 at one per minute, but most long talks work better at a relaxed pace: 20–30 slides with more discussion per slide. Long decks at high slide counts exhaust audiences.
Is one slide per minute a real rule?+
It is a widely used starting point, not a law. Slide density, speaking pace and how much you demo or discuss all move the number — which is why this calculator lets you set seconds per slide directly.
