How it works

  • Word count: English and other space-separated languages are counted by words; Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters each count as one spoken unit.
  • Speaking time = words ÷ words-per-minute × 60. The presets are 110 wpm (slow, deliberate), 130 wpm (average conversational presenter) and 160 wpm (fast, energetic).
  • Reverse mode: words needed = minutes × words-per-minute, so a 5-minute talk at 130 wpm is about 650 words.
  • The reference table shows word budgets for common talk lengths at all three paces so you can plan before you write.
  • Real delivery is slower than reading aloud alone: pauses, slide changes and audience reaction typically add 10–20%. Plan to the slow column if you tend to rush when nervous.

Frequently asked questions

How many words is a 5 minute speech?+

About 650 words at an average 130 words per minute — roughly 550 if you speak slowly and 800 if you speak fast. Most speakers underestimate how long they take on stage, so aim for the lower number.

How many words is a 10 minute presentation?+

Around 1,300 words at average pace, 1,100 spoken slowly, 1,600 spoken fast. If the talk includes slide transitions and questions, budget closer to 1,100.

What is a good speaking rate for a presentation?+

120–150 words per minute is comfortable for most audiences. Conversational speech is faster (150–180 wpm), but presentations need more pauses and emphasis, so slower reads as more confident.

Does the calculator work for Chinese or Japanese?+

Yes. Each CJK character is counted as one unit. For Mandarin, roughly 200–250 characters per minute is a normal presenting pace, so set a custom rate accordingly.

Is my text stored anywhere?+

No. Counting happens entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste leaves your device.
