Google Slides Size: The Default Dimensions and When to Change Them
The default Google Slides size is 16:9 at 10 by 5.625 inches. Here is what the other presets measure, how pixels relate to inches, and what happens to a deck when you change the size.
Check the Google Slides size before preparing backgrounds or moving an existing deck. New presentations commonly use widescreen 16:9, with a 10 × 5.625 inch reference size. In File → Page setup you can choose a different ratio or enter a custom size. Match the intended screen, print format or image output rather than assuming one setting will fill every display.
The Google Slides size presets
Page setup offers three presets and a custom option. Widescreen 16:9 is 10 × 5.625 inches, or 25.4 × 14.29 cm. Widescreen 16:10 is 10 × 6.25 inches, which suits some MacBook screens and older monitors. Standard 4:3 is 10 × 7.5 inches, the shape of old projectors and of printed handouts that need more vertical room.
Custom provides width and height inputs in inches, centimetres, points or pixels. Google documents these options in its page setup instructions. People use it for social graphics, posters, or to match a PowerPoint deck exactly.
Inches versus pixels
Page dimensions and pixel resolution describe different things. To convert inches to pixels you need a pixel-density assumption, and the export process may use its own settings. Using 96 pixels per inch as a calculation gives 960 × 540 for a 10 × 5.625 inch page. That is a reference conversion, not a guarantee of the pixel dimensions of every exported image. A 1920 × 1080 image has the same 16:9 ratio, but the actual export resolution must be checked in the resulting file.
If you are making an image to drop onto a full-bleed slide, what matters is the ratio, not the inch value. A matching 16:9 image fits the slide’s shape when placed correctly. For a 1080p presentation, 1920 × 1080 is a useful source size, but enlarging a small image to those dimensions does not restore detail. Check both the original image quality and its placement.
What happens when you change the size
A size change does not guarantee a suitable new layout. After applying it, check image proportions, title wrapping, text near the edges and backgrounds. Use a copy of the deck so you can compare these elements with the original and undo the change if needed.
Do it on a copy, then walk through every slide. How much adjustment is needed depends on the number and complexity of the slides. Set the destination size before adding detailed layouts when possible.
Matching a PowerPoint deck
PowerPoint's widescreen default is 13.333 × 7.5 inches. That is the same 16:9 shape as Google's 10 × 5.625, just a bigger reference size, so a deck moving between the two keeps its proportions. An imported .pptx may show a custom size, or be fitted to the destination presentation. Check Page setup after opening or importing it instead of assuming it has the size of a new Google deck.
The slide size calculator lists the standard sizes side by side, and the aspect ratio calculator works out any missing width or height if you need a custom shape.
What this can't do yet
The ToSlides calculators provide dimensions but do not modify a Google Slides file. Page setup and layout changes must be made in Google Slides. A ratio does not specify export resolution or guarantee an edge-to-edge display. The browser calculators are free without an account; ToSlides AI deck generation requires sign-in and credits, and does not resize an existing Google presentation.
Frequently asked questions
What is the default Google Slides size?
A new deck commonly uses widescreen 16:9, with a 10 × 5.625 inch reference size. Check File → Page setup in the actual file, especially for a deck created from a template or imported from PowerPoint.
How many pixels is a Google Slides slide?
There is no single pixel count implied by the 16:9 ratio. At 96 pixels per inch, 10 × 5.625 inches calculates to 960 × 540; inspect the actual exported file to confirm its resolution.
How do I change the slide size in Google Slides?
Open File → Page setup and select a preset or Custom. Save a copy first, then inspect text, images and backgrounds after applying the new size.
Is Google Slides 16:9 the same as PowerPoint 16:9?
Same shape, different reference size. Google uses 10 by 5.625 inches and PowerPoint uses 13.333 by 7.5 inches, so content keeps its proportions between them.
What size should an image be for a full Google Slides background?
For a 1080p 16:9 presentation, prepare a 1920 × 1080 source image. Match the slide ratio and check its placement; display settings and the original image quality still affect the result.
